iPad 9 (10.2-inch, 2021) Battery Replacement Guide

Hi everyone, welcome back to DIYGeardo.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to replace the battery on the Apple iPad 9th Generation (10.2-inch, 2021). If your iPad is draining quickly, not holding a charge, shutting down unexpectedly, or taking too long to power on, a battery replacement is the most effective solution.

The iPad 9th Generation (2021) uses a high-capacity lithium-ion battery that degrades over time with regular charging cycles. Replacing the battery can restore original battery life, improve performance, and extend the overall lifespan of your device without the cost of a full replacement.

Before starting, make sure you have the correct replacement battery and proper repair tools, which you can find in the description. This guide is designed for DIY repairers and technicians, and we’ll walk you through the process step by step, including proper heating, safe battery removal, and correct reassembly.

How to Find Tools and Parts

Step-by-Step Battery Replacement Guide

Step 1: Heat the Front Screen

Proper heating is required to separate the screen from the body.

  • Use a tablet heating pad and heat the front side of the iPad.
  • Select the tablet heating option and wait until heating completes.
  • Alternatively, you can use a heat gun or hair dryer on low heat.

Step 2: Create an Opening Gap

  • Attach a suction cup to the side of the screen and gently lift.
  • Insert a plastic card or triangle picker.
  • Carefully cut the adhesive around the edges.

⚠️ Be gentle—display cables are still connected.

Step 3: Open the Digitizer

  • Open the touchscreen like opening a book, from left to right.
  • Keep it open carefully until the LCD is removed.

Step 4: Remove the LCD Display

  • Undo four screws securing the LCD.
  • Lift the LCD to a 90-degree angle from the top.
  • Undo three screws and remove the shield.
  • Disconnect the LCD connector and remove the LCD panel.

Step 5: Disconnect Touchscreen & Touch ID

  • Unplug both touchscreen connectors.
  • Peel back the tape and lift the locking tab.
  • Disconnect the Touch ID flex cable.

Now the digitizer assembly can be removed from the body.

Step 6: Disconnect the Battery Connector

  • Undo the screw on top of the battery connector.

Step 7: Heat the Battery Area

  • Apply heat to the rear side of the iPad where the battery is located.
  • This softens the strong adhesive under the battery.

Step 8: Remove the Battery

  • Use a pry tool to gently cut the adhesive.
  • Slightly lift the logic board from the top to create space.
  • Slide a pry tool underneath and keep it steady.
  • Use multiple pry tools to slowly lift the battery while cutting the glue.

⚠️ The bottom adhesive is very strong.
There is no battery plug — the battery pins directly contact the logic board pins.

Step 9: Install the New Battery

  • Place the new battery with fresh adhesive.
  • Remove the supporting pry tool.
  • Gently push the logic board back into position.
  • Secure the battery connector screw.

Step 10: Reassemble the iPad

  1. Connect both touchscreen connectors
  2. Connect the Touch ID flex
  3. Plug in the LCD connector
  4. Install the shield and three screws
  5. Place the LCD and secure it with four corner screws

Step 11: Seal the Display

  • Ensure enough adhesive is applied.
  • Use B7000 glue or pre-cut adhesive strips.
  • Close the digitizer like closing a book:
    • Bottom first
    • Then top
    • Press sides evenly

Check that the Home button clicks properly.

Use screen bonding clips or rubber bands and leave it for some time.
