How to Find Tools and Parts

Step-by-Step Apple iPad 2017 Battery Replacement

Step 1 — Heat the Front Screen

Proper heating is essential before opening any tablet.

Place the iPad front-side down on a heating pad and select the tablet heating mode. Allow enough time for the adhesive around the display to soften.

If you do not have a heating pad, carefully use a heat gun or hair dryer. Avoid overheating one area to prevent screen damage.

Step 2 — Lift the Digitizer (Front Glass)

Attach a suction cup near the edge of the display.

Gently lift to create a small gap between the screen and the frame. Insert a plastic pry tool or triangular pick into the gap and slowly cut through the adhesive around the edges.

Work slowly around the entire frame.

⚠️ Be careful — flex cables are attached internally.

Step 3 — Open the Screen Like a Book

Lift the digitizer carefully from the left side toward the right side, similar to opening a book.

Do not pull completely upward because flex cables connect the display to the logic board.

Rest the screen safely while working.

Step 4 — Remove the LCD Screen

Remove the protective tapes covering the screws.

Undo the four screws located at each corner of the LCD panel.

Lift the LCD slightly and tilt it to about 90 degrees from the top side.

Step 5 — Disconnect LCD and Touchscreen Connectors

Remove the metal shield covering the connectors by undoing three screws.

Disconnect:

  • LCD connector
  • Two touchscreen connectors

Peel the protective tape carefully and disconnect the Touch ID flex cable.

Set the display assembly aside safely.

Step 6 — Loosen the Logic Board

Locate the screw near the battery connector.

Remove the screw and gently insert a plastic pry tool between the logic board and frame to create a small gap.

This allows safe access to the battery connection underneath.

Step 7 — Disconnect the Battery

Insert a pry tool slightly deeper at the lower edge of the logic board.

Carefully lift just enough to separate the battery pins from the logic board contacts.

Take extra care here — excessive force can damage the board.

Step 8 — Heat the Battery Area

Apply heat again — this time from the rear side of the tablet where the battery adhesive is located.

Heating softens the strong adhesive holding the battery.

If using a heat gun, apply heat gradually and evenly.

Step 9 — Remove the Battery

Insert pry tools underneath the battery.

Slowly lift while cutting through the adhesive at the bottom.

The adhesive can be strong, so work slowly and gently.

⚠️ Important:

  • The battery does not have a traditional connector block.
  • Avoid bending or puncturing the battery.

Once fully released, remove the battery.

Step 10 — Install the New Battery

Place the new battery into the correct position.

Remove the supporting pry tool holding the logic board.

Gently press the logic board back into place.

Secure the battery connector screw.

Step 11 — Reconnect Display Components

Reconnect in this order:

  1. Touchscreen connectors.
  2. Touch ID flex cable.
  3. LCD connector.

Reinstall the metal shield using three screws.

Step 12 — Reinstall the LCD

Position the LCD properly inside the frame.

Install the four screws at each corner.

Make sure the panel sits flat without cable obstruction.

Step 13 — Close the iPad

Check if adhesive remains around the frame.

If necessary:

  • Apply B7000 glue, or
  • Install new double-sided adhesive strips.

Close the digitizer like closing a book:

  • Place the bottom edge first.
  • Then align the top.
  • Press evenly around all sides.

Ensure the Home Button clicks properly.

Step 14 — Clamp the Screen

Use screen bonding clips or rubber bands to hold the display tightly against the frame.

Leave the device clamped for some time to allow adhesive bonding.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Is replacing the iPad 2017 battery difficult?

Yes. Tablet repairs require heating and adhesive removal, making this a moderately advanced repair suitable for experienced DIY users.

Q2: Can I reuse the original adhesive?

If it remains strong, you can reuse it. However, installing new adhesive provides better sealing and durability.

Q3: Why must the logic board be lifted slightly?

The battery contacts sit underneath the board. Creating a gap prevents electrical contact during removal.

Q4: How long should I clamp the screen?

Usually 30–60 minutes is enough for glue bonding.

Q5: Should I fully charge the new battery immediately?

Charge it normally after installation and allow a few charge cycles for calibration.

Troubleshooting After Battery Replacement

Q1: iPad does not turn on after repair — what should I check?

Ensure the battery connector screw is installed and the logic board is seated correctly.

Q2: Touchscreen not responding?

Reconnect both digitizer flex cables and confirm they are fully aligned.

Q3: Screen showing lines or black display?

Check the LCD connector and shield installation.

Q4: Home Button not clicking properly?

The digitizer may not be aligned correctly. Reopen and reposition before adhesive fully cures.

Q5: Battery draining fast after replacement?

Allow 2–3 full charging cycles for calibration. Also verify background apps are not consuming power.
