Hi everyone, welcome back to DIYGeardo 👋

Today, we are going to show you how to replace the battery on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet. If your tablet drains quickly, shuts down unexpectedly, or doesn’t charge properly, replacing the battery is the best solution.

Before starting, make sure you have the right tools, which you can find in the description.

Tools You Need

  • Heating pad / heat gun / hairdryer
  • Suction cup
  • Plastic card pry tools / opening picks
  • Phillips #000 / #00 screwdriver
  • Torx T3, T4, T5 Screwdriver
  • Tri-Point Y0 / Y000 Screwdriver – Occasionally for specialized internal screws.
  • Adhesive (B7000 or double-sided frame adhesive)
  • Bonding clips or rubber bands (optional but recommended)

How to Find Tools and Parts

Step-by-Step Battery Replacement

Step 1: Heat the Front Screen

  • Place the tablet front side down on the heating pad
  • Select the Tablet Heating option and wait until it completes
  • Alternatively, use a heat gun for controlled, even heating

Proper heating softens the adhesive and prevents screen cracking.

Step 2: Lift and Separate the Screen

  • Use a suction cup on the screen edges to lift slightly
  • Insert plastic card pry tools to carefully cut the adhesive around the frame
  • Work slowly and be gentle, as flex cables are attached to the logic board

Step 3: Open the Screen

  • Rotate the screen like opening a book halfway
  • This gives access to the connectors while keeping the screen stable

Step 4: Disconnect Flex Cables

  • Disconnect the digitizer (touch) connector first
  • Then disconnect the LCD video connector by undoing its screw
  • Disconnect the battery connector by removing its screw

Make sure all connectors are free before proceeding.

Step 5: Heat the Battery

  • Apply heat on the rear side where the battery sits using the heating pad
  • Softens the adhesive securing the battery to the frame

Step 6: Remove the Old Battery

  • Carefully insert a plastic pry tool under the battery
  • Gently lift and cut through the adhesive
  • Remove the battery completely from the body

⚠️ Be careful: Do not puncture or bend the battery.

Step 7: Install the New Battery

  • Remove the adhesive protector from the new battery
  • Place the battery firmly onto the logic board
  • Connect the battery connector and ensure it seats perfectly

Step 8: Reconnect LCD and Digitizer

  • Connect the LCD video connector and secure with its screw
  • Connect the digitizer connector and secure the screw
  • Double-check the battery connector screw is also in place

Ensure all connections are secure before sealing the screen.

Step 9: Apply Adhesive

  • Check the frame for sufficient adhesive
  • If needed, use B7000 glue or pre-cut double-sided adhesive
  • Apply evenly along the edges

Step 10: Reinstall the Screen

  • Slide the screen into the frame starting from the top edge
  • Align the bottom, then press sides evenly
  • Use screen bonding clips or rubber bands to secure the screen
  • Leave it clamped for the adhesive to cure

Final Checks

Before full use:

  • Power on the tablet
  • Verify battery charging
  • Test touch functionality and display
  • Ensure the screen is flush and edges are secure

FAQ’s

1. What are the signs of a failing Surface Pro 3 battery?

  • Tablet drains unusually fast
  • Unexpected shutdowns
  • Battery won’t charge fully
  • Device shuts down at high percentage
  • Overheating during use or charging

2. Is the Surface Pro 3 battery replaceable?

Yes, but it is a moderate to high-risk repair. The battery is glued under the screen, requiring screen removal, careful heating, and logic board disconnection.

3. Do I need to remove the logic board to replace the battery?

No, for Surface Pro 3, the battery is accessible after disconnecting the screen flex cables and battery connector. Full board removal is optional but sometimes helpful for better clearance.

4. Is heating required to remove the battery?

Yes. Controlled heating softens the adhesive securing the battery. Using a heating pad or heat gun reduces the risk of bending, puncturing, or damaging the battery.

5. Can I puncture or bend the battery during replacement?

No. Puncturing or bending the lithium-ion battery can cause fire, smoke, or explosion. Always use plastic pry tools and gentle pressure.

6. Should I test the tablet before sealing the screen?

Yes. Connect the battery, LCD, and digitizer connectors to verify:

  • Device powers on
  • Battery charges correctly
  • Touch screen and display work

7. Can I reuse the original battery adhesive?

No. Old adhesive loses strength. Always use new adhesive or double-sided tape for a secure fit.

8. Are there risks associated with DIY battery replacement?

  • Cracking the screen
  • Damaging flex cables or connectors
  • Improper adhesive leading to loose screen
  • Reduced dust/water resistance
