Hi everyone, welcome back to DIYGeardo 👋

Today, we are going to show you how to replace the LCD on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet. If your display is cracked, not responding, or showing lines, replacing the LCD is the solution.

Before starting, make sure you have the right tools, which you can find in the description.

Tools Required

  • Heating pad / heat gun / hairdryer
  • Suction cup
  • Plastic card pry tools / opening picks/tweezers
  • Phillips #000 / #00 screwdriver
  • Torx T3, T4, T5 Screwdriver
  • Tri-Point Y0 / Y000 Screwdriver – Occasionally for specialized internal screws.
  • Adhesive (B7000 or double-sided frame adhesive)
  • Bonding clips or rubber bands (optional but recommended)

How to Find Tools and Parts

Step-by-Step LCD Replacement

Step 1: Heat the Front Screen

  • Place the tablet front side down on the heating pad
  • Select the Tablet Heating option and wait until complete
  • Alternatively, use a heat gun for controlled, even heating

Proper heating softens the adhesive and prevents screen cracking.

Step 2: Lift and Separate the Screen

  • Use a suction cup on the screen edges to lift slightly
  • Insert plastic card pry tools and cut the adhesive around the frame
  • Work slowly and gently; flex cables are attached to the logic board

Step 3: Open the Screen

  • Rotate the screen like you are opening a book halfway
  • This allows access to the connectors while keeping the screen stable

Step 4: Disconnect Flex Cables

  • Disconnect the battery connector first
  • Then disconnect the digitizer (touch) connector
  • Finally, disconnect the LCD video connector by undoing the screw
  • Remove the protective shield covering the LCD connector

Apply gentle heat if needed to soften any glue on the shield.

Step 5: Remove the Old LCD

  • Carefully lift and remove the old screen from the frame
  • Take out the LCD video cable from the old screen
  • Ensure all flex cables are free before proceeding

Step 6: Install the New LCD

  • Connect the LCD video connector cable to the new screen
  • Secure it with the metal shield
  • Make sure the flex cable is properly seated and screws are tightened

Step 7: Reconnect to Logic Board

  • Connect the battery connector first
  • Plug in the LCD video connector and insert its screw
  • Connect the digitizer (touch) connector
  • Ensure all connections are secure and screws are tightened

Step 8: Apply Adhesive

  • Check the frame for sufficient adhesive
  • If needed, use B7000 glue or pre-cut double-sided adhesive
  • Apply glue evenly to ensure proper sealing

Step 9: Reinstall the Screen

  • Slide the screen into the frame, starting from the top edge
  • Align the bottom, then press sides evenly
  • Use screen bonding clips or rubber bands to secure the screen
  • Leave it clamped for the adhesive to cure

Final Checks

Before final use:

  • Power on the tablet
  • Verify touch functionality
  • Check display brightness and clarity
  • Ensure the screen is flush and edges are secure

FAQ’s

1. Can the touch screen be replaced separately from the LCD?

No. On the Surface Pro 3, the LCD and touch digitizer are fused, so they must be replaced together as one unit.

2. Is heating required to remove the screen?

Yes. The screen is glued to the frame. Controlled heating softens the adhesive and reduces the risk of cracking the glass or damaging flex cables.

3. Do I need to disconnect the battery before removing the screen?

Yes. Disconnecting the battery connector first is crucial to prevent short circuits during the repair.

4. Should I test the new screen before sealing it?

Absolutely. Connect the LCD and digitizer flex cables and power on the tablet to ensure touch and display functionality before applying adhesive.

5. What adhesive should I use when reinstalling the screen?

  • Use B7000 glue or a pre-cut double-sided adhesive
  • Original adhesive is best for water and dust resistance, but high-quality alternatives work for DIY repairs

6. What are the risks of DIY LCD replacement?

  • Cracking the screen or digitizer
  • Damaging flex cables or logic board connectors
  • Adhesive not curing properly, causing loose edges
  • Reduced dust or water resistance

7. Can dust get under the screen during replacement?

Yes. Work in a clean environment to minimize dust, as trapped dust may affect display clarity or touch performance.
