Hi everyone, welcome back to DIYGeardo 👋

Today, we will show you how to replace the battery on the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 tablet. If your tablet is not holding a charge, shuts down unexpectedly, or the battery drains quickly, replacing the battery is the solution.

Before starting, make sure you have the right tools, which you can find in the description.

Tools Required

  • Heating pad / heat gun / hairdryer
  • Suction cup
  • Plastic card pry tools / opening picks
  • Phillips #000 / #00 screwdriver
  • Torx T3, T4, T5 Screwdriver
  • Tri-Point Y0 / Y000 Screwdriver – Occasionally for specialized internal screws.
  • Adhesive (B7000 or double-sided frame adhesive)
  • Bonding clips or rubber bands (optional but recommended)

How to Find Tools and Parts

Step-by-Step Battery Replacement

Step 1: Heat the Front Screen

  • Place the tablet front side down on the heating pad
  • Select the Tablet Heating option and let it complete
  • Alternatively, use a heat gun or hairdryer with even, gentle heat

Proper heating softens the adhesive and prevents screen cracking.

Step 2: Lift and Remove the Screen

  • Use a suction cup on the edge to lift the screen slightly
  • Insert plastic pry tools or triangle picks to carefully cut the adhesive around the frame
  • Work slowly and be gentle, as flex cables are attached to the logic board

Step 3: Disconnect Display Flex Cables

  • Flip the screen open to 90 degrees
  • Remove small connector shields using a pry tool
  • Disconnect the LCD video connector
  • Disconnect the touch screen connectors

Quick note: In some devices, shields may be missing due to previous repairs, but normally they should be in place.

Step 4: Remove Heat Sink and Shields

  • Remove the shield on top of the heat sink using a pry tool
  • Undo nine screws securing the heat sink
  • Carefully lift and remove the heat sink

Step 5: Remove Logic Board

  • Remove four small shields to access screws underneath
  • Undo four screws to remove the WiFi bracket
  • Disconnect nine plugs on the board (left-hand side)
  • Undo two screws and remove the right-hand speaker
  • Undo eight more screws and disconnect the charging plug
  • Carefully lift out the logic board

Step 6: Heat the Battery

  • Apply heat on the rear side where the battery is located using the heating pad
  • Softens the adhesive securing the battery

Step 7: Remove the Old Battery

  • Use a plastic pry tool to gently lift the battery
  • Cut through the adhesive at the bottom carefully
  • Remove the battery completely from the body

⚠️ Be careful: Never puncture or bend the battery.

Step 8: Install the New Battery

  • Remove protective tapes from the new battery
  • Place the battery firmly in the body
  • Ensure it sits flush and properly aligned

Step 9: Reinstall Logic Board

  • Place the logic board back into position
  • Connect all adapter plugs
  • Secure the WiFi bracket with four screws
  • Reinstall the shields on the logic board
  • Place the heat sink back and secure it with seven screws
  • Replace the heat sink shield

Step 10: Reinstall the Screen

  • Check that the frame has enough adhesive; use B7000 glue or double-sided pre-cut adhesive if needed
  • Connect the LCD video cable and touch screen connectors
  • Reinstall shields on the board
  • Slide the screen into the body starting from the top edge
  • Align the bottom and press sides evenly
  • Use screen bonding clips or rubber bands to secure the screen
  • Leave it clamped for some time to allow the adhesive to cure

Final Checks

Before full use:

  • Power on the tablet
  • Verify charging functionality
  • Check display and touch responsiveness
  • Ensure no loose connectors or edges
