In this guide, we’ll show you step-by-step how to replace the battery on the iPad 8th Generation 2020 (10.2”). This guide is also fully compatible with the iPad 7th Generation 2019, as both models share the same internal design.

Step-by-Step Battery Replacement Guide

Step 1: Heating the Screen

Proper heating is required to separate the screen from the body during tablet repair.

Use a heating pad designed for tablets and mobile phones.
On the iPad 2020, make sure to heat the front side. Select the tablet heating option and allow the heating cycle to complete.

Alternatively, you can use a heat gun or hairdryer.

Step 2: Opening the Touch Screen

• Use a suction cup near the screen edges to lift the front glass
• Insert a plastic card pry tool or triangle picker
• Carefully cut through the adhesive around the edges

⚠️ Be gentle while pulling, as flex cables are connected to the logic board.

Step 3: Lifting the Digitizer

• Open the touch screen like opening a book, from left to right
• Keep it open carefully until the LCD screen is removed

Step 4: Removing the LCD Screen

• Peel back the tape covering the LCD screw heads
• Remove four screws securing the LCD
• Lift the LCD to a 90-degree angle
• Remove three screws securing the LCD connector shield
• Disconnect the LCD flex cable

Note: The shield may be missing on some devices, but your iPad should normally have it.

Step 5: Disconnecting Digitizer & Home Button

• Disconnect both digitizer connectors
• Peel back the tape
• Lift the tab and disconnect the Home Button / Touch ID flex

The touch screen assembly can now be removed from the body.

Step 6: Disconnecting the Battery

• Remove the screw on top of the battery connector
• Disconnect the battery contact from the logic board

Step 7: Heating the Battery Area

To remove the battery, additional heating is required.

• Flip the iPad over
• Heat the rear side, directly where the battery is located
• Use the heating pad until the adhesive softens

Step 8: Removing the Battery

• Use a pry tool to gently cut the adhesive
• Carefully lift the logic board slightly from the top
• Slide a pry tool underneath to keep space open

Insert additional pry tools and slowly lift the battery while cutting the adhesive.

⚠️ The adhesive near the bottom can be very strong.
There is no plug connector—the battery pins make contact directly with the logic board pins. Work slowly and carefully.

Step 9: Installing the New Battery

• Apply fresh adhesive to the replacement battery
• Place the new battery into position
• Remove the supporting pry tool
• Gently push the logic board back so it sits securely
• Reinstall the battery connector screw

Step 10: Reassembling the iPad

• Connect both touch screen connectors
• Connect the Home Button / Touch ID flex
• Connect the LCD flex cable
• Reinstall the LCD connector shield with three screws
• Place the LCD back into position
• Secure it using four corner screws

Step 11: Closing the iPad

• Ensure there is enough adhesive on the frame
  • Use B7000 glue or pre-cut double-sided adhesive if required
• Close the digitizer like closing a book
• Place the bottom edge first, then the top
• Press firmly around all sides
• Verify the Home Button clicks properly
